Cascadia Receives National Honor for Service
Bothell, WA - The Corporation for National and Community Service named
Cascadia Community College to the President’s Higher Education Community Service
Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth.
“We at Cascadia are very honored to be recognized for our community service,”
said Dr. Jean Hernandez, Cascadia Community College Executive Vice President of
Student Learning. “Our learning community doesn’t just represent the value of
passing knowledge along, but also the value of having our students apply that
knowledge by serving our local communities.”
Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal
recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and
civic engagement. Honorees for the award were chosen based on a series of
selection factors including: scope and innovativeness of service projects,
percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for
service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning
courses.
Cascadia is proud to have many students who are advancing their education,
while giving back to the community through service programs. Last September,
the college received a grant of $10,000 from Learn and Serve America to continue
integrating community service efforts into coursework. Cascadia is also
involved in the AmeriCorps Retention Project, in which AmeriCorps volunteers
work with colleges and universities to help service-learning students mentor
disadvantaged high school students and encourage them to pursue higher education
opportunities.
In congratulating the winners, U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings
said, “Americans rely on our higher education system to prepare students for
citizenship and the workforce. We look to institutions like these to provide
leadership in partnering with local schools to shape the civic, democratic and
economic future of our country.”
Cascadia also congratulates fellow honoree the University of Washington
Bothell. Both schools are proud to share a campus and a dedication to service.
