Richard Newcomb will Speak at Cascadia Community College / University of Washington Bothell on "International Sanctions—Business Risks and Human Costs"

Bothell, WA - Cascadia Community College, UW Bothell, and the World Affairs Council will host a presentation by Richard Newcomb, former Director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). The presentation, part of the Eastside Speakers Series, will take place in Bothell on March 7, at 6:30pm in the North Creek Events Center, on the campus of Cascadia Community College/University of Washington Bothell, 18325 Campus Way NE, Bothell, 98011.

"Cascadia Community College is focused on integrating global perspectives into our classrooms," said Dr. Bill Christopher, president of the college. "We are honored to host this discussion of issues that have a profound impact on our world."

Mr. Newcomb will present a talk entitled: "US Multinationals and Sanctioned Countries: Business Risk and Human Cost." Mr. Newcomb directed OFAC, which administers and enforces economic and trade sanctions based on US foreign policy and national security goals, from 1987 to 2004. Sanctions are used against targeted foreign countries based on considerations of support for terrorism, narcotics traffic, and nuclear weapons proliferation.

"This series gives our campuses the opportunity to put a personal face on international policies," said Steven G. Olswang, Chancellor, UW Bothell. "Mr. Newcomb’s first-hand understanding of the role tariffs play on enforcing United States international policies will provide students and community members alike a clearer awareness of these huge economic forces."

Eastside Speakers Services is a program of the World Affairs Council to bring speakers on international topics to the region.

The presentation will be open to the public for $15, $10 for World Affairs Council members and students. Registering to attend may be accomplished through the website www.world-affairs.org/calendar.cfm or at the door before the presentation.
