CASCADIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE CELEBRATES WOMEN’S WEEK
Bothell, WA - Cascadia Community College.
Cascadia Community College invites the public to attend an event in recognition of Women’s Week on the Bothell campus. Jolene Jang will be the featured speaker at the event, which is scheduled for Thursday, March 10, 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm, at the North Creek Café on the campus shared by Cascadia Community College and UW Bothell. A personal safety awareness presentation will follow from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
Ms. Jang’s address is titled “Woman not so weak: A Young Bothellite’s effort triggers federal legislation, the ultimate self-defense from a predator.”
In July 2000, a man was videotaping up Jolene Jang’s dress as she stood at an ice cream stand at the Bite of Seattle. He was charged with voyeurism, but the Washington Supreme Court ruled that the charged man was “not guilty” because she was in a public place, and no law at that time forbid his activities.
During that time, Jolene rallied support for legislation. Her efforts succeeded in May 2003. Congress introduced federal voyeurism legislation which eventually passed and was signed by the president in December, 2004. Before her efforts, there were only a few states with laws prohibiting videotaping underneath clothes; greater awareness has led to laws in more than 40 states.
Ms. Jang will tell her story of one person’s passion to protect others in this obscure case, despite her personal challenges in meeting family, work and community commitments. Her story has attracted the producers of Oprah, Good Morning America and Donahue. She will appear on the Today Show in the near future.
