CASCADIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE SAVES WATER WITH SIMPLE CHANGE IN PRACTICES

Bothell, WA - Cascadia Community College.

Cascadia Community College announced today that simple changes adopted by the college reduced water demand by 177,000 gallons from May 1 to December 31.

“We had more students on campus and used significantly less water,” said Dee Sliney, Director of Auxiliary Services and Capital Projects. “Because of the success of the program, the changes will be made permanent.”

Cascadia is making an on-going effort to reduce water demand on the campus. The water savings figure is based on a comparison of 2004 water bills with bills from 2003 for the same eight months. These savings were accomplished by turning the flush mechanism in restroom toilets from automatic to manual (except in disability stalls) and by using signage to heighten awareness of water use by students and staff.

Dr. Brinton Sprague, Interim President of the college, said, “We are very proud to be part of conserving precious water supplies in our region.” He noted that the announcement of the water savings coincided with Governor Gregoire’s Drought Emergency declaration. “Congratulations to Dee Sliney and our partners at UW Bothell for an imaginative and effective effort.”

The campus has been uniquely dedicated to environmental stewardship since its inception. Located at the intersection of I-405 and SR-522, it is the home of Cascadia Community College and UW Bothell. It includes 58 acres that have been returned to functioning wetland which are used for instructional purposes.
