Governor Gregoire Recognizes Cascadia Students at the All-Washington Academic Team Ceremony

Bothell, WA - Cascadia Community College students Candance [spelling is correct] Weaver and Deborah Oaks were recognized at the annual statewide All-Washington Academic Team Award ceremony on Thursday, March 2. The award ceremony was held at the South Puget Sound Community College campus in Olympia.

Governor Christine Gregoire was the principal speaker at the event, and presented medallions to the students to commemorate their selection.

"Deborah and Candance exemplify the courage and dedication of our students," said Dr. William Christopher, president of Cascadia Community College. "They have returned to school and are fulfilling their dreams in a manner that offers inspiration to all of us. Cascadia is fortunate to have two such impressive students at the ceremony."

Oaks, 29, has a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.92 and is majoring in Environmental Sciences. She has a 3-year-old daughter. In the fall of 2006, she is planning to attend the University of Washington Bothell as an undergraduate in the Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences program.

Weaver, 36, has a GPA of 3.71. She was inspired by her work as a teacher’s aide to enter the field of education. Her major is Integrated Studies and her goal is to earn a degree in elementary education with a minor in Spanish.

Annually, community and technical colleges in Washington nominate students from each institution to join the All-Washington Academic Team. Students receive recognition for academic excellence and scholarships from sponsoring organizations. This year, sponsorships by KeyBank and the Northwest Education Loan Association (NELA) make possible $750 scholarships every Team member. Nearly every public and private college and university in Washington offers additional scholarships to those who choose to attend their schools.

The students, their families, and the presidents of their colleges attended, as well as members of the legislature. Each year, the award ceremony is a high point of recognition for community college scholars. Photos available.
