Cascadia Awarded $50,000 Grant For Service-Learning
Bothell, WA - Cascadia Community College recently received a $50,000
grant from Washington Campus Compact (WACC) and Learn and Serve America to
promote and expand service-learning on campus. As part of the grant,
Cascadia will partner with University of Washington Bothell on events and
projects. This is the third Learn and Serve grant awarded to Cascadia.
"We wanted to support the work that Cascadia has already
started. Cascadia has pretty rapidly moved into this position to be able
to manage a grant of this size. It is something Cascadia should be really
proud of," said WACC Communications Director Brian Heinrich.
Cascadia will use the new grant to develop more
service-learning courses for students and continue existing ones, provide
professional development for faculty in service-learning, and strengthen
partnerships with community organizations and local leaders.
Service-learning courses combine community service work
with classroom instruction. The community service work is intended to give
students a better sense of the issues facing their communities and to further
their understanding of course material.
A highlight of Cascadia and UW Bothell's collaboration will
occur in late October when the schools jointly bring Nadinne Cruz to campus to
speak and consult regarding service-learning opportunities for college students.
Cruz is the former director of Stanford University's Haas Center for Public
Service.
Cascadia is one of seventeen two- and four-year colleges and universities in
Washington and Idaho that were selected to split almost $400,000 in Learn and
Serve funding for 2008-09. The only other school to receive $50,000 was Boise
State University.For more information contact:
