Cascadia Participating In National Learn & Serve Challenge
BOTHELL, WA -
Cascadia Community College will be participating in the National Learn & Serve
Challenge from October 6-12.
Cascadia's Challenge events will offer volunteer opportunities for students,
faculty, staff and community members, including participation in a food drive to
support the Greater Bothell Parent Resource Center.
The goals of the Challenge are to increase the public's
understanding of service-learning and to inspire more communities to launch
their own service-learning programs.
Service-learning is a hands-on teaching method that engages young people in
solving problems within their schools and communities through academic studies
and out-of-school learning activities.
"Service-learning is a very effective way for our students
to learn outside the classroom and to interact with other members of the
communities we serve. Events like
the Learn & Serve Challenge play an important role in helping us create
opportunities for our students to engage in community issues and become more
aware of the interdependent nature of society as a whole," said Cascadia
President Dr. Bill Christopher.
Anyone interested in volunteering during the Learn &
Service Challenge is encouraged to attend the kickoff session at Cascadia on
Monday, October 6, from 2:30-3:30pm in room CC2-160.
Whole Foods has donated bags for use in the food drive for
the Greater Bothell Parent Resource Center.
Bags and lists of needed food items can be picked up in room 307 in the
Library Annex at Cascadia.
Volunteers can fill the bags with food items or make a donation to be used to
purchase food on the list.
Cascadia has an active service-learning program and has
received several grants from Learn & Serve America, including a $50,000 grant
for the 2008-09 school year. For
