WEYERHAEUSER COMPANY FOUNDATION AWARDS $5,000 TO
CASCADIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION FOR EDUCATION OUTREACH EFFORT
Bothell, WA - The Cascadia Community College Foundation received a $5,000 grant from the Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation for the college’s successful Public Housing Outreach Project. The program helps connect adults living in King County Housing Authority (KCHA) housing with educational opportunities.
Outreach Project staff inform KCHA residents about education and employment services and help them overcome barriers to self-sufficiency. Housing residents are assisted in setting education and career goals and exploring options for financial assistance to pursue education or training. Participants may also receive help in identifying employment services and overcoming obstacles, such as the lack of affordable childcare.
Cascadia Community College has partnered with KCHA to serve residents of 197 housing units in northeast King County. The Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation joins several other philanthropic supporters of the project, including the Verizon Foundation, the Harvest Foundation, and the Cascadia Community College Foundation.
“We are thankful for the Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation’s generous support of this important program,” said Linda Hendrickson, Executive Director of the Cascadia Community College Foundation. “Improving access to education for all our community’s citizens is critically important not only to the people affected by this project, but also to the continuing economic vitality of our region.”
During three years of operation, the project has built partnerships with the Department of Social and Health Services, WorkSource Redmond, Employment Security, Redmond Boys and Girls Club, Eastside Housing Association, Lake Washington Technical College and Bellevue Community College, as well as with KCHA. Cascadia Community College, from its campus in Bothell and at satellite locations, offers transfer degrees, certificates, and adult basic skills such as English as a second language and GED courses.
