Cascadia's Faculty

Cascadia Community College is accepting applications for Associate Faculty positions for future quarters. We are seeking applicants with expertise and/or interest in an outcomes-based interdisciplinary curriculum, alternative pedagogies, learning technologies, and collaborative work.

For consideration for future quarters, application materials should be submitted as soon as possible.  The following list shows the requirements for the various disciplines at Cascadia Community College. If there is not a current opening to teach a particular discipline, a pool of applications will be collected for future quarters.

  • Accounting: Instructors teach a variety of classes including practical accounting, financial accounting, managerial accounting, income tax and payroll tax. All courses are taught using computers. Qualifications: Master's in Business Administration or Accounting or other business-related field and successful teaching experience.

  • American Ethnic Cultures (Sociology 151): Instructors teach a course that will explore contemporary issues of race and ethnic relations in the US. Qualifications: Applicants must have one year of successful teaching experience in Sociology, Cultural Anthropology or other social science courses, as well as one of the following:
    1) Masters degree in Sociology
    OR
    2) Master's degree in Anthropology with coursework in Cultural Anthropology
    OR
    3) Masters degree in a social science discipline and at least six graduate level Sociology and/or Cultural Anthropology courses
    OR
    4) Masters degree in a social science discipline and a Bachelors degree in Sociology or Anthropology.
     
  • American Sign Language: Instructors will facilitate learning for students in American Sign Language courses. Qualifications: Master's degree is required from an accredited institution AS WELL AS extensive coursework or certifications in American Sign Language, American Sign Language Teacher Association (ASLTA), Certification from the National Association for the Deaf (NAD) or related area AND successful ASL teaching experience, preferably in a community college setting.
  • Anthropology: Instructors teach lower division anthropology classes such as cultural anthropology and/or physical anthropology. Qualifications: Master's degree in anthropology or related field and successful teaching experience, preferably in community college setting.
  • Art: Instructors teach introductory non-studio art courses. Qualification: Master's degree in Art or related discipline and successful teaching experience. Preferred Qualifications: Studio experience and teaching experience in the community college setting.
  • Astronomy: Instructors teach Survey of Astronomy. Qualifications: Master's in Astronomy or Physics (with extensive coursework in Astronomy) or closely related science discipline and successful teaching experience, preferably in a community college setting.

  • Biology: Instructors teach various biology courses such as Survey of Biology, Survey of the Kingdoms, General Botany, etc. Qualifications: Master's in Biology or closely related science field and successful teaching experience, preferably in a community college setting using learning outcomes based instruction.

  • Business: Instructors have a broad understanding and background in fundamental concepts and functions of business so that students receive an overview of business concepts that will provide a framework for additional courses in this area. Qualifications: MBA or Master's in related field required AND post-secondary vocational certificate OR experience and training to qualify for vocational certification. Preferred Qualifications: Successful teaching experience in Higher Education, experience teaching classes in project management, entrepreneurship, and/or organizational behavior.
  • Business and Information Technology (BIT 142, BIT 143): Instructors teach courses in collegiate level computer programming. This includes those classes that transfer directly to baccalaureate institutions in a computer science degree as academic coursework that is not elective. Qualifications: Master's in MIS/CIS, Computer Software Engineering, Computer Science or related academic area. Instructors must also qualify for post-secondary vocational certification which includes significant and recent industry experience related to the teaching field.


  • Business and Information Technology (Networking, Web Technology and Digital Arts/New Media/Video Games, and Programming classes NOT BIT 142, BIT 143): Instructors teach courses in their field(s) of expertise, which include programming, web design, networking or digital arts/new media/video games. Qualifications: Faculty will teach professional/technical courses and must have or be able to qualify for post-secondary vocational certification. This includes:

    1) For all fields, significant and recent industry experience related to the teaching field,
    AND
    2) For Programming, A Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution
    OR
    2) For Other Areas, Coursework in MIS/CIS, Computer Software Engineering, Computer Science or related academic area, Added value is brought to these positions by candidates who carry relevant industry certification.
     AND
    3) For Networking only, Current First Aid/CPR certification, and industry certification such as A+, MCP, MCSE, CCNA, or other similar and equivalent industry certification.


  • Careers in Information Technology (Business and Information Technology 105): Instructors will facilitate learning for Business and Information Technology (BIT) students exploring career possibilities in their respective fields and strategies for securing an internship experience. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree AS WELL AS experience in multiple technology fields or experience in the career services or job search area. Must have or be eligible for vocational certification.
     
  • Chemistry: Instructors will facilitate learning for students in Introduction to General Chemistry, a one-quarter course for liberal arts and allied health science majors that includes laboratory. Qualifications: Master's in Chemistry or closely related science field and successful teaching experience, including laboratory, preferably in a community college setting.
     
  • Chinese: Instructors will facilitate learning for students in first year Mandarin Chinese language courses. Qualifications: Masters degree in Chinese or related field (i.e. East Asian/Chinese Studies, Linguistics, or Literature). Near native fluency and some teaching, training, or translation experience preferred.
     
  • College Success: Instructors teach courses designed to enhance student learning and increase retention of first year students. Qualifications: Master's in Education, Student Development, Social Science, Humanities or related discipline.
  • Drama: Instructor will facilitate learning for students in fundamentals of acting and introduction to drama. Qualifications: Masters in Fine Arts with an emphasis in Theatre Arts (or related field) and successful teaching experience in higher education.
  • Earth Sciences: Instructors teach an interdisciplinary class which discusses the evolution of the universe, galaxy, and solar system, leading to the formation of the Earth. Earth's systems and human impacts are also discussed. The use of technology and multiple pedagogies is necessary. Qualifications: Master's degree in the Earth Sciences or Astronomy and successful teaching experience. Preferred Qualification: Teaching experience in the community college setting.
  • Economics: Instructors teach courses in microeconomics and macroeconomics. Qualifications: Master's degree in Economics or related field; College level teaching experience in Economics or courses in a related field.
  • Education: Instructors teach Introduction to Education and other education courses. Qualifications: Masters degree in Education and one year of successful part-time or full-time teaching experience.
  • Engineering: Instructors will teach Statics, Dynamics, and Mechanics of Materials. Qualifications: Masters degree in Engineering or other field if Bachelors Degree in Engineering has been completed. Successful completion of Statics and Dynamics at undergraduate level. Preferred qualification: successful teaching experience in a community college setting.
  • Developmental English (English 080 and 090): Instructors teach developmental level reading and writing courses. Classes emphasize problem solving, critical thinking, reading, comprehension and analysis of a variety of texts. Qualifications: Master's in English, Rhetoric, TESOL, Adult and/or Developmental Education or Master's degree in a related field emphasizing adult educational theory and literacy issues; successful teaching experience at the community college, college or university level.
  • English (English 100 and above): Instructors teach introductory college composition, college research writing, literature and/or creative writing. Classes emphasize critical reading, critical thinking, writing in a variety of contexts, and self-evaluation. Qualifications: Master's in English, Rhetoric, or a Master's or Doctorate in a related field; successful teaching experience in written composition at the community college, college or university level.
  • Environmental Science: Instructors teach a variety of classes including protection of the environment, animals, plants, and other natural resources; wetlands preservation; and research activities for students. Qualifications: Master's in Environmental Science or closely related science field and successful teaching experience, preferably in a community college setting.
  • ESL (English as a Second Language): Master's degree in TESOL or related Master's degree with significant ESL teaching experience in a formal setting, as well as 3 years of experience teaching ESL to adults required, preferably in a community college setting. Native speaker level of proficiency in English and willingness to complete state required reports and participate in state assessment plan also required.
  • Foundations (ABE/GED Communications): Masters degree in Adult Education, Developmental Education or a field demonstrating knowledge and study of adult theory, instructional methods specific to adult learners, and literacy issues. Two years of experience teaching in an ABE/GED/ESL/DevED program in a formal setting required; community college teaching experience preferred. Position requires the ability to teach all levels of ABE Communications and GED curricula, participation in the state competency and assessment system, and completion of required state reporting forms.
  • Foundations (ABE/GED Mathematics): Masters degree in Adult Education, Developmental Education or a field demonstrating knowledge and study of adult theory, instructional methods specific to adult learners, and literacy issues. Two years of experience teaching in an ABE/GED/ESL/DevED program in a formal setting required; community college teaching experience preferred. Position requires the ability to teach all levels of ABE Mathematics and GED curricula, participation in the state competency and assessment system, and completion of required state reporting forms.
  • French: Instructors will facilitate learning for students in first and second year French language courses. Master's in a Romance Language and 45 quarter graduate credits in French/related field or a Teaching Certificate in French. Near native fluency and some teaching, training, or translation experience preferred.
  • History: Instructors teach survey courses in United States history and/or World Civilizations. Qualifications: Masters degree in History or American Studies and successful teaching experience, preferably in the community college setting.
  • Geography:  Instructors teach introductory geography.  This course is primarily physical geography with the addition of regional contexts and relationships to human geographical phenomena.  The use of technology, multiple pedagogies, and creative assessments is required. Qualifications: Master's degree in Geography or closely related science discipline and successful teaching experience, preferably in a community college setting.

  • Japanese: Instructors will facilitate learning for students in first and/or second year Japanese language courses. Qualifications: Masters in Japanese or related field (i.e. East Asian/Japanese Studies, Linguistics, or Literature). Near native fluency and some teaching, training, or translation experience preferred.
     
  • Mathematics: Instructors teach a variety of classes ranging from Pre-Algebra to Calculus and Introduction to Statistics. Qualifications: Master's in Mathematics or a related field and successful teaching experience, preferably in a community college setting.
  • Media Studies/Journalism: Instructors need a broad understanding and background in media's history and cultural, economic and social impacts, as well as how the Internet, television, radio, film, and print media affect private and public life. Understanding of Associated Press standards, understanding of the convention of style, revising, editing, and proofreading a newspaper and teaching media ethics. Qualifications: MA in Communication Studies or MA or MFA in Film & Cultural Studies or MA in Journalism/Communications. Successful teaching experience in Higher Education.
  • Multicultural Communication: Instructors will introduce students to a variety of communication strategies and techniques that will deepen their abilities to interact among and across cultural settings, and to evaluate the influence of culture on communication. Qualifications: MA in Communication Studies, MA in Communication, or MA in Speech Communication, and successful teaching experience in higher education administration.

    Coursework and/or experience teaching either multicultural communication or intercultural communication preferred.

  • Music - Theory and History: Instructors teach a variety of classes ranging from music theory and history to more specific understanding of music types and styles. Qualifications: Master's in Music and successful teaching experience, preferably in a community college setting.
  • Natural Science: Instructors will facilitate learning for students in Evolution of Earth Systems, a one-quarter course that satisfies general education requirements for the Natural Sciences with no laboratory. The course incorporates some Astronomy along with Earth Systems Science and includes origins of the universe, solar system and Earth followed by a survey of major events that have shaped and are shaping our planet. Qualifications: Master's degree in an Earth or Environmental Science, or a closely related science field and success at teaching science to non-majors, preferably in a community college setting.
  • Nutrition: Instructors will facilitate learning for students in Introduction to Nutrition course. Qualifications: Master's degree in Nutrition, Health, or related field required. Professional certification and teaching experience preferred.
     
  • Philosophy:  Instructors teach a variety of courses in Philosophy, including Introduction to Philosophy, Critical Thinking, Symbolic Logic, World Philosophy, Ethics, Comparative Religion, and Philosophy of Religion. Qualifications: Master's degree in Philosophy or closely related field such as Theology and successful teaching experience, preferably in a community college setting.
     
  • Political Science: Instructors teach Political Science and/or History courses within a higher education setting. Qualifications: Master's in Political Science or History with an emphasis in Political science and/or American and State and Local Government, or related discipline.
  •  

  • Psychology: Instructors will teach a variety of lower-division psychology courses such as Introduction to Psychology, Psychological Disorders, and Human Development. Qualifications: Master's degree in Psychology or related behavioral science discipline. Teaching and/or clinical experience preferred.
  • Sociology: Instructors teach a full range of courses including introduction to sociology, race and ethnicity, sex and gender, organizational behavior, human relations, and American ethnic studies.  Qualifications: Applicants must have one year of successful teaching experience in Sociology or other social science courses, as well as one of the following:
    1) Masters degree in Sociology
    OR
    2) Masters degree in a social science discipline and at least six graduate level Sociology courses
    OR
    3) Masters degree in a social science discipline and a Bachelors degree in Sociology.
     
  • Spanish: Instructors will facilitate learning for students in first and second year Spanish language courses. Qualifications: Master's degree in Spanish or related field (i.e. Spanish or Latin American Studies, Linguistics, or Literature).  Near native fluency and some teaching, training, or translation experience preferred.
     
  • Speech Communication: Instructors teach basic Speech Communication and other courses such as Interpersonal Communication, Intercultural Communication, Public Speaking, Principles of Argument and Small Group Discussion. Qualifications: Master's in Speech Communication and successful teaching experience in higher education.

Course of Study

Cascadia's curriculum is grounded in a holistic view of teaching, learning, and doing. It is outcomes-based and guided by four overarching Learning Outcomes: 1) Learn Actively; 2) Think Critically, Creatively, and Reflectively; 3) Communicate with Clarity and Originality; and 4) Interact in Diverse and Complex Environments. Faculty members are expected to foster student achievement of discipline-specific learning outcomes as well as College-wide and transfer degree learning outcomes.

Assessment is key to the design of the curriculum and the success of students. Consequently, a heavy emphasis is placed on continuous authentic assessment of student learning, instructional programs and practices, and institutional effectiveness. Associate faculty will be invited to play a key role in assessing outcomes in these areas.

The curriculum is designed to meet student needs. Classes will be delivered in a variety of timeframes and delivery formats including (but not limited to) learning communities, technology-based distance education, Instructional Television (ITV), and modularized instruction. Classes may be offered in daytime, evening, weekend, short-term, accelerated, self-directed, or asynchronous (online, telecourse, etc.) formats or combinations of several formats. Some classes may be offered in open-entry, open-exit format.

Diversity and affirmation of difference are hallmarks of the Cascadia culture. The curriculum is explicitly designed to promote skills, knowledge, and awareness about pluralism and equity. College and Faculty Organization

Cascadia is organized around principles that allow for access to information, collaboration and communication. Faculty will be organized into five interdisciplinary groups formed around the four College-wide learning outcomes (Learn, Think, Communicate, and Interact) and Assessment.

Context and Responsibilities

Under the direction and supervision of the Associate Dean, associate faculty will engage in a variety of learning support activities such as:

  • Design, develop and assess curriculum;
  • Prepare and teach assigned classes;
  • Assess student learning and instructional/institutional practices;
  • Facilitate student learning through in-class and out-of-class activities;
  • Identify course and program learning outcomes;
  • Identify and implement assessment measures to achieve course, program and college learning outcomes;
  • Identify and implement assessment measures to achieve course, program and college learning outcomes;
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of teaching filed(s), adult learning and trends in community colleges;
  • Incorporate pedagogies that support best learning practices.

Compensation and Workload

These are part-time, non-tenure track positions. We view the associate faculty as integral parts of Cascadia Community College and are committed to facilitating their professional growth and development. Accordingly, opportunities for additional non-classroom employment may also be available (instructional/program leadership, tutor/learning assistance, institutional governance, assessment, curriculum development, etc.). Compensation is highly competitive.
