The shared campus of Cascadia Community College and the Univeristy of Washington Bothell includes a 58-acre wetland that is one of the biggest floodplain restorations in the Pacific Northwest. Work on the project began over a decade ago with construction of a new stream channel system that rerouted North Creek and restored the linkage between channel and floodplain components of the North Creek ecosystem. Subsequent planting of native species of bushes, flowers, and trees along with active monitoring of the site are recreating a forest similar to what existed generations ago. A variety of wildlife, both in and out of the water, has already returned to the area.
Weekday tours of the wetland are regularly available. Weekend tours are available on a limited basis and must be requested at least three weeks before the desired tour date. A minimum of six people are required to schedule a weekend tour. Call (425) 352-8000 to learn more about wetland tours.
A number of Cascadia classes, as well as classes from the Univeristy of Washington Bothell and other local schools, use the wetland to enhance learning and bring classroom instruction to life. Water sampling, stream monitoring, and wildlife observation are some of the active learning opportunities that take place under careful monitoring throughout the wetland. Additionally, the entire community has access to portions of the wetland along a boardwalk and a paved path that connects with the Sammamish River Trail. Learn more about the wetland at the University of Washington Bothell website.
