Placement Testing (COMPASS Test)

Valid photo ID is required for testing. There is a $16.25 non-refundable testing fee. The average completion time for the test is 2 hours, but there is no specific time limit.  The test must be completed in the same day started. Please allow ample time to complete the test before the office closes. Students may take the COMPASS test once every 30 days.

Testing occurs in the Kodiak Corner on a first come, first served basis.

Testing is offered:

Monday and Thursday 9am-3pm
last seating for testing at 3pm.

Tuesday and Wednesday 9am-4pm
last seating for testing at 4pm.

Friday 9am-12pm
last seating for testing at 12pm.

Purpose

All students enrolling in credit classes are required to assess their current skill levels in English and Math with the COMPASS placement test. Scores are evaluated and students are placed in appropriate courses according to Cascadia placement standards. Assessment is waived for students who submit transcripts showing successful completion (2.0 or above) of college-level English or Math. Students may also submit COMPASS assessments taken at other colleges. Math assessments are only valid if completed within the last twenty four months before registering for classes.

Taking the COMPASS Test

The COMPASS test is taken on a computer and has three multiple choice sections (writing, reading, and math). Scratch paper and pencils are provided. No dictionaries or personal calculators are allowed, but calculators are available on the test computers.

If you need special accommodation please contact the Disability Support Services office at (425) 352-8128.

The math section begins at the algebra level. As the questions are answered correctly, they become more difficult. As questions are answered incorrectly, they become easier. Placement in the most appropriate math and English courses is according to the current skill level as measured by the COMPASS test. Results are printed immediately following the test.
