What is a UW NetID?

UW NetID is a personal logon account which stands for University of Washington Network Identification and is required to access some online services, including:

  • Off-campus access to Library resources designated as "UW restricted" or requiring a UWNetID.
  • The UWB Wireless Network, which is available on all floors of the Library buildings (LB1, LB2, and LBA) and UW Bothell buildings (UW1 and UW2).

Creating your username

Keep the following points in mind when you create your UW NetID:

  • UW NetIDs must be 1-8 characters long.
  • Use only lowercase letters and numbers. The first character must be a lowercase letter.
  • Once you choose a UW NetID, you cannot reset it.
  • You may wish to choose a gender-neutral UW NetID to avoid possible harassing email.
  • If you choose to use just your first name, and it is a common one, you could receive email meant for other people.
  • A common method of selecting a UW NetID is to use initials and all or part of your last name.
  • With over sixty thousand UW NetIDs on campus, you may not get your first choice, but the online system will help you select one.

Creating your password

Unfortunately, computer hackers have developed methods for cracking simple passwords. For this reason, the new password you enter is checked by the system. If it is not complex enough, you are immediately asked to think of another one. You are also encouraged to change your password on a frequent basis.

Your password must meet the following criteria:

  • The password must have at least eight characters.
  • The password must not appear in any dictionary.
  • The password must contain both lowercase and uppercase alphabetic characters.
  • The password should contain non-alphanumeric characters such as: !, @, #, $, %, ^, &, *
