And They Also Played Jazz... Music 140: Spring Quarter 2013


This course is designed for students with no prior music training. Students will explore the foundational elements of the jazz tradition in the United States, including African antecedents, music in African American slave culture (the ring shout, spirituals, and work songs), and the basic structures and style periods of the music and culture, including early New Orleans jazz, big band swing, the bebop movement, cool jazz, hard bop, the avant garde, neo-traditionalism, and jazz as an international musical language. Students gain a practical foundation for analysis of the basic elements of music and of the historical, political, and cultural influences surrounding the birth and evolution of jazz.

Prerequisite(s): Completion of ENGL 090 with a grade of 2.0 or higher or placement by testing in ENGL 100.
