The Math and Writing Center provides assistance in empowering and enhancing the skills of all students to reach their academic goals. We provide academic support and assistance in mathematics, writing, and reading skills.

Getting the Most from Tutorial Services

The tutors will help guide you through the process of understanding the subject matter. They will not do your homework for you or answer questions without challenging you to think.

To make the very most of your tutorial time with them, you should:

1. Study your textbook and lecture notes thoroughly and attempt the assigned problems before you go for tutoring help.
2. Try to identify specific questions or concepts you need to address during the tutorial session.
3. Expect the tutor to ask you questions about the material. They do this to find out what you understand, and to provide you with information and strategies tailored to your individual needs.
4. Be patient. Several students often come for tutoring at the same time. If the tutors are especially busy, you may have to wait a little longer for individual assistance. Use this time to study the material.
5. Expect the tutor to suggest general study strategies to help you improve your overall academic performance. These strategies will help in all of your courses.
6. Never wait until the day before the test or the day before an assignment is due to seek assistance. Study a few hours each day, and keep up with your assignments. It is EASIER to keep up than to catch up!
7. Use other resources such as your instructor's office hours, form study groups with your friends, and utilize the services of the Math and Writing Center.
8. Keep a positive attitude about the subject and about your potential to excel. Your attitude will most often determine how well you do in the course.

About the Math Services

Tutors are available on a walk-in basis to help you with your math. Come in to study for exams or just to do your daily homework. If you get stuck, someone will be there to help. Math tutors can work with you one-on-one or lead group problem-solving sessions. 

What to Expect

The math tutor will guide you to finding the answer for yourself by asking leading questions and comparing the problem to material you've already mastered. The goal of a math tutor is to show you strategies for figuring out problems on your own.

About the Writing Services

The Writing Center staff believes that anyone can learn how to write well. We also believe that writing is a skill that continues to develop over a lifetime, and that even accomplished writers can improve their writing. Keeping these basic beliefs in mind, Writing Center staff are careful to respect the innate intelligence of the writer and to focus their attention on the writer rather than on the paper. We view the paper as a sample of your writing with which to point out ways for you to improve as a writer. We respect your ideas and your time. Tutors can work with you at any stage of the writing process from rough draft to final copy.

What to Bring

When you come in for an appointment, we ask that you bring the most recent draft of your work in progress, any guidelines you may have been given by a professor or an editor about the project, and any prewriting you have done to organize your text. By bringing these materials, we can see what expectations your readers have for you, what ideas you are working with to shape your paper, and where you are right now in the writing process.

What to Expect

When people first come to us, they often have the mistaken impression that they will simply hand us their current draft for us to "fix." We expect you to be fully involved in the consultation by telling us your goals and the problems you are having, by reading the paper with us during the consultation so you can spot some of your own errors, and by reworking sections of the text in front of us so that you can find your own solutions to writing difficulties with only a nudge here and there from us. Our primary goal is to help writers develop their own strategies for working on a text independently, and to do that, we ask every person we work with to take an active role in the consultation.
