Services & Activities Fees

Overview

The Services and Activities (S&A) Fee is fee included in tuition for most students attending Cascadia College. This fee helps support student-centered programs, services, and events on campus.

The funds collected through the S&A Fee are allocated by the Services and Activities Fee (S&A) Budget Committee. The budget is then managed by the Office of Student Life and the Events & Advocacy Board (EAB) to ensure the money is used in ways that reflect student priorities and benefit the student community.

Each year, the Events and Advocacy Board (EAB) forms a student-majority committee, called the Services & Activities (S&A) Budget Committee to determine how these fees should be redistributed to benefit the student body. The committee follows a thoughtful process that ensures student voices are prioritized. This includes requesting and reviewing budget proposals from a variety of campus departments and programs, then carefully deliberate on how funds should be allocated.

The funds are used to support a wide range of student-focused services such as student jobs, campus events and activities, support for student communities, programming, and other valuable campus resources and amenities.

To learn more about the annual budget review process, visit EAB in the Involvement and Leadership Office (ILO), in the Activities & Recreation (ARC) or email EAB@cascadia.edu.

The budget development process begins annually during winter quarter. Cascadia students may join the S&A Budget Committee to review proposals from across campus and make recommendations on funding student services and programs. This is a great way to have your voice heard on campus, in addition to learning more about the internal workings of campus.

To volunteer for the S&A Budget Committee, please contact EAB@cascadia.edu.

S&A Expenditures

State House Bill (SHB) 2352 concerning institutions of higher education services and activities fees, sponsored by Rep. Chris Reykdal, D-Olympia, was signed by the Governor on March 29, 2012. The bill requires Services and Activities (S&A) fee committees at institutions of higher education to post S&A fees expenditure information on the institutions’ websites.

Contingency Requests

Each year, the S&A Budget Committee sets aside at least five percent (5%) of the annual budget for contingency requests. These funds become available after the annual S&A allocation process is complete and may be requested by faculty, staff, or student-led groups to cover unexpected expenses or to support the development of innovative, student-centered programs. Students must play an active role in both the creation and implementation of any proposed program. All requests must be submitted to the EAB and require a timely majority vote for approval.

Programs funded by S&A Fees are intended to provide meaningful experiences that enhance and support the college’s educational mission beyond the classroom. These programs should help students develop the ability to learn actively; think critically, creatively, and reflectively; communicate clearly and with originality; and engage effectively in diverse and complex environments. Please keep this in mind as you respond to the questions below.

To request Contingency funds for a student-focused program, please fill out the Contingency Fund Request Form.
