Natural and Built Environments
Our 127-acre campus resides on the traditional shared lands of the Coast Salish people. The floodplain soils of the North Creek were rich with organic deposits which supported marshlands that were forested with shrub, cedar, and Douglas fir. As the original stewards of these lands, tribes fished for salmon in the waters of the North Creek until European settlers arrived in the mid-1800s. Soon the indigenous people were forced to move. A channel system with levees straightened North Creek so it could be used to transport logs to lumber mills. In the 1900s, the property was purchased for use as a cattle ranch. In the 1970s and 80s, the Boone-Truly ranch worked a herd of Herefords numbering 450. The state purchased the land in 1996 as the site for Cascadia College and University of Washington.
Today, Cascadia and UWB shelters one of the largest wetland restorations on the West Coast. Restoration paralleled the design and construction of the first buildings on campus, transforming 58 acres of pastureland for cattle to a fully functioning wetland ecosystem.
Our campus is a showcase of contemporary northwest architecture. It adheres to our original Campus Master Plan (CMP) showing the core campus buildings stretching north to south on either side of a promenade. The newest evolution of our CMP indicates locations for new building projects that will address growth, accessibility, and energy efficiency while maintaining view corridors, upland forests, and marsh.
