The Associate Faculty Role

These positions are part-time, non-tenure track positions. We view our associate faculty as integral parts of Cascadia and are committed to facilitating their professional growth and development. Accordingly, opportunities for additional non-classroom employment may also be available (instructional/program leadership, tutor/learning assistance, institutional governance, assessment, curriculum development). Compensation is highly competitive.

Our curriculum is grounded in a holistic view of teaching, learning, and doing. It is outcome-based and guided by four overarching learning outcomes:

  • Think critically, creatively, and reflectively
  • Learn actively
  • Interact in diverse and complex environments
  • Communicate with clarity and originality

Associate faculty members are expected to foster student achievement of discipline-specific learning outcomes as well as college-wide and transfer degree learning outcomes.

Assessment is key to the design of the curriculum and the success of students. Consequently, a heavy emphasis is placed on continuous authentic assessment of student learning, instructional programs and practices, and institutional effectiveness. Associate faculty will be invited to play a key role in assessing outcomes in these areas.

The curriculum is designed to meet student needs. Classes will be delivered in a variety of timeframes and delivery formats including (but not limited to) learning communities, technology-based distance education, Instructional Television (ITV), and modularized instruction. Classes may be offered in daytime, evening, weekend, short-term, accelerated, self-directed, or asynchronous (online, telecourse, etc.) formats or combinations of several formats. Some classes may be offered in open-entry, open-exit format.

Under the direction and supervision of the an academic dean, associate faculty will engage in a variety of learning support activities such as:

  • Designing, developing, and assessing curriculum
  • Preparing and teaching assigned classes
  • Assessing student learning and instructional/institutional practices
  • Facilitating student learning through in-class and out-of-class activities
  • Identifying course and program learning outcomes
  • Indentifying and implementing assessment measures to achieve course, program, and college learning outcomes
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of teaching field(s), adult learning, and trends in community colleges
  • Incorporating pedagogies that support best learning practices

1. In compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA), proof of authorization to work in the U.S. will be required at the time of hire.

Cascadia recognizes the Cascadia College Federation of Teachers (CCCFT). CCCFT is the exclusive representative for faculty at Cascadia College. As a condition of employment, all faculty shall become members of the CCFT or pay a representation or non-association fee equal to the membership dues. Dues or fees are paid via payroll deduction.

Disciplines and Qualifications

Faculty teach a variety of classes including practical accounting, financial accounting, managerial accounting, income tax, and payroll tax. All courses are taught using computers.

Minimum qualifications: Master's degree in accounting, business administration, or other accounting related field.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction. Accounting professional credential (Certified Public Accountant, Certified Management Accountant, or other recognized accounting credential).

Instructors will facilitate learning for students in ASL courses.

Minimum qualifications: Master's degree is required from an accredited institution, as well as extensive coursework or certifications in American Sign Language, American Sign Language Teacher Association (ASLTA), certification from the National Association for the Deaf (NAD) or related area, and ASL teaching experience

Instructors teach lower division anthropology classes such as cultural anthropology and/or physical anthropology.

Minimum qualifications: Master's degree in anthropology or related field.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors teach introductory non-studio art courses.

Minimum qualifications: Master's degree in art or related discipline.

Preferred qualifications: Studio experience and teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors teach Survey of Astronomy.

Minimum qualifications: Master's in astronomy or physics (with extensive coursework in astronomy) or closely related science discipline.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors teach various biology courses such as Survey of Biology, Survey of the Kingdoms, General Botany, and other related courses.

Minimum Qualifications: Master's in biology or closely related science field.

Preferred Qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors have a broad understanding and background in fundamental concepts and functions of business so that students receive an overview of business concepts that will provide a framework for additional courses in this area.

Minimum qualifications: MBA or master's in related field.

Preferred qualifications: Knowledge and experience teaching classes in project management, entrepreneurship, and/or organizational behavior.

Instructors in Business and Information Technology teach courses in three overlapping fields: Networking Infrastructure Technology; Web Applications Programming; and Computer Science.

Minimum qualifications: For the Web Applications Programming and Networking Infrastructure Technology programs, instructors must have a Bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years related industry experience in the last five years (vocational certification). 

For the Computer Science transfer degree program, instructors must have a Master’s degree in computer science or computer software engineering. If Master’s was not in Comp Science, additional coursework emphasis (15 quarter credits or more, or equivalent) in a technical area.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors will facilitate learning for students in Introduction to General Chemistry, a one-quarter course for liberal arts and allied health science majors that includes laboratory.

Minimum qualifications: Master's in chemistry or closely related science field, including experience teaching laboratory sections.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors teach Adult Basic Education classes to develop reading and writing skills within state defined levels and to support student achievement of the Washington state standards.

Minimum qualifications: Master’s degree in adult education, developmental education or a field demonstrating knowledge and study of adult theory, instructional methods specific to adult learners, and literacy issues with significant instructional experience teaching adult basic education in a formal class setting. Ability to teach all levels of ABE and GED curricula, and compliance to state mandated assessment, curriculum, and reporting.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction. Knowledge of HS21+ implementation and contextualized/integrated instruction in Basic Skills.

Instructors teach classes in reading, writing, grammar, and speaking and listening to International students that promote English language acquisition.

Minimum qualifications: Master's degree in TESOL or related master's degree with significant ESL instructional experience teaching International students who are continuing in academic programs.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors teach ESL classes to promote English language acquisition within state defined levels and to support student achievement of the Washington state standards.  

Minimum qualifications: Master's degree in TESOL or related master's degree with significant ESL instructional experience teaching adult basic education in a formal class setting, native speaker level of proficiency in English, and compliance to state mandated assessment, curriculum, and reporting.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors teach courses designed to enhance student learning and increase retention of first year students.  

Minimum qualifications: Master's in education, student development, social science, humanities, or related discipline.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors teach precollege level reading and writing courses. Classes emphasize problem solving, critical thinking, reading, and comprehension in preparation for college level courses.

Minimum qualifications: Master's in English, rhetoric, reading, developmental education, adult basic education, or a related field emphasizing developmental education theories.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.  

Instructor will facilitate learning for students in fundamentals of acting and introduction to drama.

Minimum qualifications: Master’s in fine arts with an emphasis in theatre arts or related field.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors teach an interdisciplinary class which discusses the evolution of the universe, galaxy, and solar system, leading to the formation of the Earth. Earth's systems and human impacts are also discussed. The use of technology and multiple pedagogies is necessary.  

Minimum qualifications: Master's degree in the earth sciences or astronomy.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.  

Instructors teach courses in microeconomics and macroeconomics. 

Minimum qualifications: Master's degree in economics or related field.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction in economics or related discipline.

Instructors teach Introduction to Education and other education courses.

Minimum qualifications: Master’s degree in education.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors will teach Statics, Dynamics, and Mechanics of Materials.  

Minimum qualifications: Master’s degree in engineering or other field if bachelor’s degree in engineering has been completed. Completion of Statics and Dynamics at the undergraduate level.  

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors teach introductory college composition and college research writing. Classes emphasize critical reading, critical thinking, writing in a variety of contexts, and self-evaluation.

Minimum qualifications: Master's in English, rhetoric, or a related field.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in written composition in higher education.

Instructors teach a variety of classes including protection of the environment, animals, plants, and other natural resources, wetlands, preservation, and research activities for students.

Minimum qualifications: Master’s in environmental science or closely related science field.

Preferred qualification: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors teach geology in addition of regional contexts and relationships to human geographical phenomena. The use of technology, multiple pedagogies, and creative assessments is required.

Minimum qualifications: Master's degree in geography or closely related science discipline.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors teach survey courses in United States history and/or World Civilizations.  

Minimum qualifications: Master’s degree in history or American studies.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors will facilitate learning for students in first and/or second year Japanese language courses.

Minimum qualifications: Master’s in Japanese or related field (i.e. East Asian/Japanese studies, linguistics, or literature).

Preferred qualifications: Near native fluency and some teaching, training, or translation experience.

Instructors teach a variety of classes ranging from pre-college level mathematics through Calculus; Math in Society and Introduction to Statistics.

Minimum qualifications: Master's in mathematics, Master's in education with math emphasis OR Master's in related field and relevant experience.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors need a broad understanding and background in media's history and cultural, economic, and social impacts, as well as how the internet, television, radio, film, and print media affect private and public life. Understanding of Associated Press standards, understanding of the convention of style, revising, editing, and proofreading a newspaper and teaching media ethics.

Minimum qualifications: MA in journalism, communications, or communication studies or MA/MFA in film and cultural studies.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction. 

Instructors will introduce students to a variety of communication strategies and techniques that will deepen their abilities to interact among and across cultural settings, and to evaluate the influence of culture on communication.  

Minimum qualifications: MA in communication studies, communication, or speech communication.

Preferred qualifications: Coursework and/or higher education teaching experience in either multicultural communication or intercultural communication.

Instructors teach a variety of classes ranging from music theory and history to more specific understanding of music types and styles.

Minimum qualifications: Master's in music.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors will facilitate learning for students in Evolution of Earth Systems, a one quarter course that satisfies general education requirements for the natural sciences with no laboratory. The course incorporates some astronomy along with earth systems science and includes origins of the universe, solar system, and Earth followed by a survey of major events that have shaped and are shaping our planet.

Minimum qualifications: Master's degree in an earth or environmental science or a closely related science field and experience teaching science to non-majors.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors will facilitate learning for students in Introduction to Nutrition.

Minimum qualifications: Master's degree in nutrition, health, or related field.

Preferred qualifications: Professional certification and teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors teach a variety of courses in philosophy, including Introduction to Philosophy, Critical Thinking, Symbolic Logic, World Philosophy, Ethics, Comparative Religion, and Philosophy of Religion.

Minimum qualifications: Master's degree in philosophy or closely related field such as theology.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors teach political science and/or history courses within a higher education setting.

Minimum qualifications: Master's in political science or history with an emphasis in political science and/or American and state and local government, or related discipline.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors will teach a variety of lower-division psychology courses such as Introduction to Psychology, Psychological Disorders, and Human Development.  

Minimum qualifications: Master's degree in psychology or related behavioral science discipline.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors teach a full range of courses including: Introduction to Sociology, Contemporary Issues of Race and Ethnic Relations in the U.S., and Sociology of Sex and Gender.

Minimum qualifications: Master’s degree in sociology, master’s degree in a social science discipline and at least six graduate level sociology courses, or master’s degree in a social science discipline and a bachelor’s degree in sociology.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors will facilitate learning for students in first and second year Spanish language courses.

Minimum qualifications: Master's degree in Spanish or related field (i.e. Spanish or Latin American studies, linguistics, or literature).

Preferred qualifications: Near native fluency and training, or translation experience. Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction.

Instructors teach basic speech communication and other courses such as Interpersonal Communication, Intercultural Communication, Public Speaking, Principles of Argument, and Small Group Discussion. Courses include a variety of communication strategies and techniques that will deepen their abilities to interact among and across cultural settings and to evaluate the influence of culture on communication.  

Minimum qualifications: Master's in speech communication, communication studies, or communiation. 

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience in higher education using learning-outcomes based instruction
