Artist Stephanie Krimmel Talks with Cascadia Art Students

You can probably relate to this: you followed a passion or your work with full force only to hit a wall and feel your enthusiasm fade? Seattle artist Stephanie Krimmel knows that feeling well. Her work, now on display at Mobius Hall, tells a story not just of creativity, but of resilience.

At her opening on October 15, Krimmel spoke to students from Kathy Fruge Brown’s Art 120 and Art 121 courses, sharing how she reignited her creative spark and found new momentum.

Lesson One: Shake It Up and Start Small

When Krimmel felt stuck, she committed to practicing a new art discipline for just six minutes a day.

“Six minutes wasn’t enough, especially because I loved what I was doing,” she said.

That small daily habit helped her rediscover joy in her work. And although she views art as a practice not just a product, her creative output flourished.

Lesson Two: Courage Builds Opportunity

Krimmel’s first exhibitions were in condominium lobbies. Over time, she built the confidence to submit her work to group shows. That leap led to larger stages, including a recent public commission for Bothell City Hall titled Sammamish River.

Lesson Three: Embrace Limitations Creatively

Constraints became part of Krimmel’s artistic process. To fit her work in her car, she experimented with smaller formats. When it took 40 hours to hang a show using pushpins, she invented a method to string images together, turning her challenge into innovation.

Gallery Show - Sense of Place

Krimmel’s work is deeply shaped by place and emotion. Her show, titled Sense of Place, reflects what she sees and how she feels in abstract multimedia “place portraits.” Close examination reveals visual influences like the railings from the Washington state ferries, street signage, and dogwood blossoms.

Krimmels’ show runs through December 4, 2025 at the Mobius Gallery. Hours are Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Open to community members.
