Dr. Lindsay Custer earned her PhD in Sociology from the University of Michigan and her B.A. in Psychology and Philosophy from the University of Iowa. Her doctoral research focused on the negotiation of cross-cultural differences and the division of household labor in intercultural marriages between Americans and Japanese. In addition, she has conducted research on racial/ethnic differences in marital processes and outcomes at the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research. From 1994-1998 she taught language courses and conducted research on gender and relationships in Osaka, Japan. She was a 2014-2015 Fulbright Scholar in Tokyo, Japan during which time she taught courses on U.S. society and conducted research on feminist identities and gender role expectations among young Japanese women. Her areas of academic interest include gender and racial identities, marital relationships, and reproductive labor.
